Series background & context
The Unaltered is Lorena Angell's big YA fantasy series, and it starts with a simple jolt: teen track star Calli Courtnae breaks the 100-meter world record and gets swept off to Montana, where she expects Olympic training and gets something much stranger. She is not just fast. She is a Runner, one of many people whose bodies carry unusual powers tied to cosmic energy.
From there, the series opens into a hidden world running alongside ordinary life. People with similar abilities gather in clans for safety and identity. Some can heal. Some can hunt. Some can repeat moments. Some can read minds or see ahead. Calli enters that world as an outsider, which is part of what makes the books easy to get into. She has to learn the rules at the same speed the reader does.
Then the story gets bigger. During an early mission, Calli comes into possession of the Sanguine Diamond, a powerful stone that unlocks more abilities inside her, including future sight. That one change turns a fast girl with a new gift into the center of a much older struggle involving Diamond Bearers, rival factions, government pressure, betrayals, and the uneasy balance between nature and human ambition.
The setting helps sell the whole thing. Angell places all this in a present-day world of training facilities, roads, compounds, forests, and secret operations. Governments watch the clans. The clans watch back. A lot of the tension comes from the feeling that the supernatural world is hidden in plain sight, close enough to touch but dangerous to fully understand.
Calli is the heart of it, but she is not carrying the series alone. Her connection with Chris gives the books much of their romantic tension, while figures like Maetha, Crimson, Brand, Max, and General Harding keep shifting the balance around her. Some are mentors. Some are threats. Some are both. The series likes characters who are not easy to sort into neat boxes, and that gives even the action-heavy parts a layer of doubt.
It gets messy, fast.
Across the books, the scale keeps widening. The early novels, especially A Diamond in My Pocket, A Diamond in My Heart, and The Diamond of Freedom, are built around dangerous missions, hidden stones, and questions of loyalty. Later books such as The Diamond Bearers' Destiny, The Diamond Bearer's Secret, The Diamond Bearers' Rising, and The Diamond Bearer's Ring move into divided Diamond Bearers, public exposure, new weapons that can neutralize powers, imprisoned scientists, and the approach of a larger cosmic threat. Even when the mythology expands, the core appeal stays the same: quick pacing, secret powers, teen relationships under stress, and a heroine trying to decide what kind of person she will be when every choice has consequences.
