The Talents Trilogy Books in Order

The Talents Trilogy is a dark historical fantasy set in an alternate version of the late Victorian world. It begins in 1882, when children with unusual gifts are being found, hidden, and hunted. These children are known as Talents, and their abilities can look like miracles, curses, or both.

At the center of Ordinary Monsters are Charlie Ovid and Marlowe. Charlie has survived a brutal childhood in Mississippi and can heal from injuries that should kill him. Marlowe, a foundling discovered in a railway freight car, gives off a strange blue light. Two detectives are sent to bring them to safety, but a terrifying figure made of smoke is already on their trail.

Their destination is Cairndale Institute, a decaying refuge near a loch north of Edinburgh. There, other gifted children have been gathered, including Komako, who can manipulate dust, and Ribs, who can disappear from sight. Cairndale offers shelter, training, and companionship, but it is not a simple safe haven. The adults around the children have secrets of their own, and the Institute sits close to dangers that have been kept out of ordinary sight.

The threat reaches beyond one pursuer and one journey. The Talents' gifts are tied to a weakening boundary between the living and the dead, putting the children at the heart of a problem far larger than they understand. The series asks what it means to call someone monstrous, especially when fear is doing the naming.

Expect gaslit streets, isolated Scottish landscapes, secretive institutions, strange creatures, and a large cast whose paths gradually cross. The mood is eerie and often grim, but the books also make room for friendship, loyalty, and the relief of finding people who understand what it feels like to be different.
