Series background & context

The Sutherlands: One Family is a shared-world collection of romances about the sprawling, complicated Sutherland family. Different authors write different branches of the family tree, creating stories that range across Texas, old money, estrangement, secrets, and the kinds of family history nobody can completely escape.

Robin Covington's contribution is Shadow Ranch, a male/male romantic-suspense novella about Eli Sutherland. Eli returns to the ranch after his mother's death, even though it is the last place he wants to be. The ranch carries painful memories, local judgment, and a past shaped by the death of his father.

Coming home is not always comforting.

Eli is an artist who has also been hurt by betrayal in Austin. He does not know much about ranching and does not expect his relatives or the community to welcome him. Then someone attacks him, a dead body appears, and Texas Ranger Shep Lockwood becomes the one person who seems determined to help him survive the trouble surrounding Shadow Ranch.

The romance between Eli and Shep develops alongside the mystery. Shep offers steady support, but Eli's decision to remain in town has to be his own. The story asks whether a place linked to so much pain can ever become somewhere he chooses to stay.

The larger Sutherland project is designed so readers can sample individual stories without needing to know every family connection. That makes it a good fit for readers who enjoy anthologies and shared settings, where each author brings a new voice and couple to the same complicated clan.

Covington's entry stands out for its combination of small-town Texas atmosphere, a dangerous ranch mystery, and an emotional homecoming.

Start with Shadow Ranch for Robin Covington's part of the family saga. It works as a complete novella, while also offering a doorway into the larger Sutherland world for readers who want more romances connected by one very messy family.
