Series background & context

The Surprise Brides series begins with one useful idea, love is rarely arriving in the form anyone expected.

These historical romances are built around sudden engagements, unplanned marriages, and situations where one or both people are caught off guard by the life now in front of them. That can mean a woman thinks she is choosing a practical future and finds far more resistance than expected. It can also mean a man discovers someone else has arranged his domestic life without bothering to ask.

Surprise works both ways.

Clemmons's Jamie is a good example. Olivia believes a mail-order match with a widower will finally give her the family life she wants. Jamie, meanwhile, is stunned to learn a bride is arriving at all. That mismatch creates friction right away, but it also gives the relationship somewhere to go.

Readers who like reluctant grooms, determined heroines, and marriages that begin with a jolt instead of a plan should feel right at home here. The series keeps its tone warm even when the first meeting is anything but comfortable.
