Series background & context

The Smart Alec series follows Alec, a young wizard from the world of Alus. Its opening book, Smart Alec in the Dark Lands, sends him somewhere far outside the lands and magical problems he knows.

Alec arrives in a foreign world where the Zmaj, a proud race of dragon people, once ruled. Their old power is gone. The dark elves now control the land and keep the remaining Zmaj under close watch, turning some into sentries and leaving the wider history of the place hanging over everyone who lives there.

It is a bad place to arrive without a plan.

The story gives Alec a fish-out-of-water role. He is not simply traveling to an unfamiliar city or joining a new quest. He has been transported into a society shaped by conquest, suspicion, and the aftermath of another people’s fall. That makes the setting matter as much as the immediate danger.

As Alec tries to understand the Dark Lands, he encounters one of the dragon men serving the dark elves. He also faces the Hollows, undead creatures that add a more openly frightening threat to the landscape. The series combines magical adventure with the pressure of surviving in territory controlled by people who have no reason to trust an outsider.

The Alus connection gives returning readers a familiar starting point, but the Dark Lands offer a different corner of the larger fantasy world. Rather than staying with the war against the Dark Emperor or Sebastian’s battle mage campaigns, this story looks outward, toward portal travel, lost rulers, and a place where the past has been turned into a system of control.

Alec has to learn quickly.

Expect a fantasy adventure built around displacement, uneasy encounters, and dangerous discoveries. The first book establishes the Dark Lands, the defeated Zmaj, the ruling dark elves, and the strange undead hazards that Alec must navigate. It is a good fit for readers who like the Alus setting but want to see what lies beyond its better-known kingdoms.
