The Shattered King Books in Order

The Shattered King is one of Holmberg's darker, more court-centered fantasy series. It begins in the kingdom of Cansere, where war is closing in and healing has been declared the only legal form of craftlock. Nym, a healer and beekeeper supporting her family, is summoned away from home to the palace and ordered to heal Prince Renn, a shut-in whose illness seems beyond anything she understands. From there, the story turns into a mix of captivity narrative, political fantasy, and slow-burn romance.

Nym is a good match for that setup because she is practical before she is grand. She wants to get back to her siblings, not become important. That makes the palace even more unsettling. Renn is cold, remote, and clearly carrying more than sickness, while the court around him runs on pressure, control, and secrets. Every bit of progress in Nym's healing work pulls her deeper into a place she never wanted to belong to, and that feeling of entrapment drives much of the first book's tension.

The magic here suits the mood. Craftlock is not treated as soft or purely decorative. Healing is political, regulated, and tied to questions of what bodies are worth and who gets to make those decisions. By the time the story reaches The Half-Hearted Queen, those private tensions have widened into open war, imprisonment under King Nicosia, a dangerous magical bond, and a prophecy heavy enough to strain both love and duty.

This is romantic fantasy, but the romance lives under real pressure. Nym and Renn are not floating above the plot. They are caught inside it, and the books keep asking what love costs when crowns, succession, and survival are all involved. The tone is darker than The Paper Magician and less cozy than Whimbrel House, but Holmberg keeps it readable by staying close to character and by making the emotional stakes plain.
