Series background & context

The Shadows is a Christian romance saga about love under strain, old wounds that do not stay buried, and the difficult work of choosing honesty over escape. The series begins in England and later moves through the Lake District, Ireland, and the Scottish Highlands. Unlike Duncan's stand-alone romance collections, the first three books form one continuing story and are best read in order.

Lingering Shadows introduces Elizabeth Walton-Smythe, known as Lizzy, a teacher from a wealthy family who believes her future is settled. A painful disruption to those plans sends her into a hasty relationship with Daniel, a charismatic Irishman whose past is more troubled than she understands. Their marriage begins before either of them has dealt with what they are running from.

Love cannot carry every secret by itself.

In Facing the Shadows, Daniel's struggles deepen and Lizzy has to decide what protecting herself and her unborn child requires. She also has to face her own past, including the relationship she left behind. The book keeps its attention on the emotional reality of loving someone whose harmful patterns are beyond a partner's power to fix.

Beyond the Shadows finds Lizzy and Daniel building a new life in the Lake District while Daniel works to maintain sobriety and grow in faith. A family tragedy draws them back toward Ireland and tests the fragile progress they have made. The central tension is whether support, faith, and honesty can hold when Daniel is confronted by the people and memories that once pulled him down.

The final two books widen the world. Secrets and Sacrifice follows Grace O'Connor, who arrives in the Scottish Highlands with secrets and a guarded heart. Her connection with former paratrooper Ryan MacGregor brings both romance and a need to reckon with her past. A Highland Christmas turns to Grace's sister Brianna and Andrew McKinnon, placing a new relationship amid family gatherings and Christmas tensions.

The series has a heavier emotional tone than some of Duncan's other romances. It includes addiction, damaged family relationships, shame, grief, and the fear that a past mistake has defined a person forever. Still, the approach is hopeful. Faith is presented as a source of strength and accountability, not a shortcut around consequences.

Start with Lingering Shadows and continue through Beyond the Shadows without skipping ahead. After that, Secrets and Sacrifice and A Highland Christmas offer connected stories that expand the community around Lizzy and Daniel.
