Doctor Who: The Seventh Doctor - The New Adventures, Volume 1

by Andrew Cartmel

2018

This audio set reunites the Seventh Doctor with Chris Cwej and Roz Forrester for four original stories. It captures the mood of the New Adventures era, bigger ideas, moral arguments, and a TARDIS team that never quite gets an easy trip.

Series background & context

The Seventh Doctor Adventures range on audio keeps returning to one of Doctor Who's most adaptable incarnations. Sylvester McCoy's Doctor can do comedy, creepiness, emotional manipulation, historical unease, and full-scale cosmic plotting, sometimes all in the same story. That makes him ideal for box sets and linked runs where the tone can shift fast.

The constant is that slightly dangerous intelligence.

This Doctor smiles, jokes, and acts harmless right up until the moment you realise he has been steering events for a while. Audio suits that especially well. Voices, pauses, and withheld information do a lot of work in a Seventh Doctor story, and Big Finish has leaned into that, pairing him with different companions across different corners of his life.

Some releases keep him with Ace, the partnership most people think of first. Others bring in Mel, or later companions from the novels and audios. That variety is part of the fun. The Doctor changes depending on who is standing next to him, and the range gets mileage from that without losing his core identity.

Andrew Cartmel's work sits naturally beside this territory because he helped define what the Seventh Doctor became in the first place.

If you like the Doctor at his most strategic, morally knotty, and occasionally eerie, this is a very good corner of the audio universe to explore. The stories can be welcoming to newcomers, but they also reward anyone who already enjoys the tension between the Seventh Doctor's friendly surface and the sharper mind behind it.
