Series background & context

This series shifts Sophie Jordan's historical romance toward an older, richer, and more openly social kind of drama. The heroines are not fresh debutantes learning the rules for the first time. They already know the rules. They have lived inside them, worked them, and, when necessary, bent them. That change in perspective gives the books a fun edge.

The setup is high society London at its glossiest and meanest. The women at the center are wealthy wives, widows, and daughters whose lives are shaped by rank, gossip, money, and constant scrutiny. In The Countess, Lady Gertrude, usually called Tru, is a polished society force whose carefully managed world gets messy when the man courting her daughter wants her instead. In The Duchess, Valencia is a merry widow who enjoys her freedom until a new duke arrives with his sisters, his own needs, and a very inconvenient effect on her pulse.

What makes the series distinctive is that status is not the fantasy, it is the trap. These women are powerful in public ways, but still limited by reputation, marriage, and what society is willing to forgive. Jordan has fun with parties, rivals, and sharp social maneuvering, but she also pays attention to loneliness, compromise, and the strange bargains women make to keep their place.

The tone is glamorous, witty, and steamy, with a little more bite than some of her earlier Regencies. These are books about attraction, yes, but also about reinvention. What happens when a woman who has already built a life for herself wants something more, or something different?

If you enjoy historical romance with rich settings, mature heroines, and a lot of sparkling social tension, this is a great place to jump in.
