The Key to Happiness keeps the format lean while widening Sam's personal world a little. An unmarked key turns up in his pocket after a chance encounter, and that small mystery leads him toward an old friend, fresh danger, and another problem that is much larger than it first looks. Because the stories are short, the pace matters. Kerns does not spend long on setup. He likes the moment when a simple mistake stops being simple, and both stories get there quickly.

These are not sprawling detective novels. They are fast, noir-leaning stories with a modern voice and enough wit to keep the mood from going flat. If you like private investigators who are smart, worn down, and still just stubborn enough to do the right thing, Sam Colton is easy to settle into. The books read like side streets in Kerns's catalog, smaller, darker, and worth the detour.
