Series background & context
The Russian Witch's Curse has one of Baker's boldest premises. Powerful men have been trapped in horse form by an old curse, and each book throws a different heroine into that chaos. Sometimes the meeting happens on a racetrack or a ranch. Sometimes it starts with a rescue, an attack, or a terrible split-second choice. Either way, ordinary life is over the moment one of these women realizes the horse in front of her is not a horse at all.
These books take horses very seriously.
That matters because the animal side of the series never feels decorative. Baker clearly likes the world of riding, veterinary work, stables, and training, and that gives the books texture. In My Queendom for a Horse, Kris buys an abused black stallion while trying to save her family's farm. In later books, other women are pulled into the same cursed network through violence, family loyalty, magic, or sheer bad timing. The result is a linked romantasy saga where every pairing is different, but the underlying curse keeps knitting the books together.
The heroines are a big part of the appeal. They are not passive observers waiting for magical men to explain the plot. They are vets, fighters, survivors, sisters, and women already managing messy lives before the fantasy element arrives. That gives the romance more bite. The men may be powerful, royal, morally gray, or literally dangerous, but the women are not there to be impressed. They are there to survive, choose, argue, and in some cases drag the cursed idiots toward basic decency.
The tone moves between fairy-tale weirdness and real danger. Some books lean funnier, some darker. Mob violence, family debts, old political wounds, and awakening powers all play a role as the series grows. There is also an ongoing sense that the curse is bigger than any one couple. Each book solves part of a problem while exposing another corner of the larger magical history tied to Russia, power, and control.
If you want romantasy that is stranger than the usual dragon or fae setup, this series is worth a look. Start with My Queendom for a Horse and keep going in order. The linked cast and shared curse make that the most rewarding route. Expect capable women, dangerous horse-shifters, strong romantic chemistry, and plenty of scenes where saving the world and saving one impossible creature turn out to be almost the same job.
