Tone matters a lot here. These are dark fantasies, but not cynical ones. There is violence, shadow magic, possession, manipulation, and a sense that evil has had a long time to settle into the foundations of the realm. At the same time, Chester keeps coming back to courage, loyalty, stubbornness, and the possibility that decent people can still make a difference even when the system around them feels corrupted beyond repair.

The trilogy also leans hard into romantic tension, imperial politics, and prophecy.
