Series background & context

The Roots of Chaos cycle is Shannon's sweeping epic fantasy set in a world divided by dragons, religion, and an old catastrophe known as the Grief of Ages. Rather than a traditional numbered trilogy, it is a growing sequence of standalone but connected novels that can be read in different orders. Each book peels back another layer of the world's history and the legends people tell about it.

The Priory of the Orange Tree introduces that world at a moment of crisis. In the West, Queen Sabran the Ninth rules the queendom of Inys, where an ancient story claims her bloodline keeps the fire breathing wyrm called the Nameless One asleep. In the South, Ead Duryan serves at Sabran's court while secretly belonging to the Priory, a sisterhood of mages sworn to a different version of the same myth. Far to the East, the dragonrider Tané Miduchi trains to fly alongside revered water dragons, even as political tensions threaten the fragile peace between cultures.

As those threads converge, the book moves across continents, islands, and seas, following characters who must question the histories they have been raised to believe. It is a story about queens and spies, scholars and pirates, human choices and the dragons that stand behind them. At the same time, it makes space for intimate relationships, including a central sapphic romance that grows alongside the looming threat of the Nameless One's return.

A Day of Fallen Night steps back several hundred years to show an earlier age when the world first faced a global draconic war. It follows Tunuva Melim, a veteran sister of the Priory waiting for a threat that may never come, Glorian Berethnet, a princess who expects a quiet life in the shadow of her parents, and Dumai, a young woman in a Seiikinese temple trying to wake the long slumbering gods. When the Dreadmount erupts and wyrms take to the sky, their stories weave together into a portrait of how sacrifice, faith, and political decisions shape the legends later generations inherit.

Among the Burning Flowers narrows the focus to the southern kingdom of Yscalin, a land of sun and lavender standing on the brink of disaster. It follows Marosa Vetalda, a princess trapped in her father's cruel court, her distant betrothed Aubrecht Lievelyn, and Estina Melaugo, a hunter who tracks the sleeping draconic beasts scattered across the world. As the great wyrm Fýredel stirs, Yscalin becomes the first arena for the fires that will echo into the events of The Priory of the Orange Tree.

Taken together, the Roots of Chaos books mix court intrigue, religious schisms, and large scale battles with close attention to friendships, families, and romance. They are rich in invented history and geography but always return to how individuals live under the weight of prophecy and expectation. The series is unapologetically queernorm, centering women and queer characters in positions of power and asking what they are willing to risk to change their world.

If you enjoy immersive high fantasy with dragons, politics, and a focus on complex heroines, this cycle offers multiple entry points into the same vivid universe.
