Series background & context

Despite the prim title, this series is not about calm lessons and quiet manners. The Penwich books are Regency romances built around women whose lives have already slipped outside the lines of respectability, or are about to. The school in the title represents the kind of virtue society demands from women. The stories show how fragile that idea really is.

Each book follows a heroine facing a different kind of danger. In Sins of a Wicked Duke, Fallon hides in plain sight, disguised as a footman in the household of a notorious duke. In In Scandal They Wed, Evelyn has already paid dearly for past choices and is living with the threat of fresh ruin. In Wicked Nights With a Lover, Marguerite believes her time may be short and decides to stop living by everyone else's rules.

That gives the series a strong through line. These are books about women navigating a world that judges them quickly and forgives them slowly. The men they meet are not especially safe either. Dukes, viscounts, rogues, and self made men all bring their own baggage, along with plenty of temptation. Desire is not treated as a light inconvenience here. It changes plans, upsets power, and forces people to decide what they are willing to risk.

The tone is warm, sensual, and dramatic without losing its sense of fun. Jordan likes sharp class tension, hidden motives, and heroines who have to think on their feet. She also likes putting people together under difficult circumstances, which keeps the emotional temperature high.

If you enjoy Regency romance with scandal, survival, disguises, and heroines who refuse to stay politely boxed in, this trilogy is a very readable corner of Jordan's historical catalogue.
