The Pack drops Lisi Harrison's school-drama instincts into a fantasy setting and gets something nicely wild out of it. The series takes place at Charm House, short for the Center for Human-Animal Reform and Manners, a boarding school for girls with animal lights inside them. These lights are powerful, instinctive, and not always easy to control.

So yes, this school has claws.

Sadie is the way in. She arrives wanting to stay out of trouble and blend into the background, only to discover that she has one of the fiercest animal lights of all. That gets her noticed fast, and not always in comforting ways. Before long she is pulled toward the Pack, the school's most powerful girl group, led by Lindsey, who knows exactly how to turn belonging into something irresistible.

That is where the series gets smart. The animal powers are fun, but they are not just decoration. They are tied to personality, instinct, self-control, and the fear of being too much. Sadie does not only have to learn a magical system. She has to figure out what kind of person she wants to be when power, popularity, and attention are suddenly on offer. Harrison uses that setup to talk about self-esteem, leadership, and the pressure girls feel to hide their strength when it makes other people uncomfortable.

The boarding-school setting helps a lot. Charm House is its own little ecosystem, full of rules, rivalries, secrets, and social rituals. Add in crushes, especially Sadie's feelings for an off-limits boy, and the books start to feel like classic Lisi Harrison with fur and fangs. Friendships matter, but so do hierarchies. Loyalty matters, but so does the temptation to rise.

There is also a steady sense of outside threat. Sadie and the other girls are not just navigating homework and popularity. They are dealing with institutions and expectations that want to tame them, sort them, or define them before they can define themselves. That gives the series a little extra bite beneath the glitter and school drama.

If you like middle grade stories that mix fantasy with friendship politics, The Pack is an easy recommendation. It has powers, crushes, school rules, and a heroine learning how not to disappear inside somebody else's definition of acceptable. Harrison clearly enjoys the fun of the premise, but she is also interested in what it means for girls to trust their instincts without letting those instincts rule everything.
