The Nine Lives of Chloe King books are YA paranormal adventures built around one very good hook: what if a teenage girl discovered that the weird things happening to her were not random at all, but signs that she belonged to a hidden world with claws? Chloe starts the series looking like a fairly normal sixteen-year-old, with school, friends, arguments at home, and a messy love life.

Then the powers show up.

Night vision, speed, balance, reflexes, claws, and the unnerving truth behind the title all arrive at once. In The Fallen, Chloe learns that she is not alone and that someone is hunting her. From there the books widen from personal mystery into a bigger conflict involving other people like her and the Order of the Tenth Blade, a group that would very much prefer Chloe not stay alive long enough to understand what she is.

The San Francisco setting fits the series beautifully. Braswell uses hills, alleys, rooftops, bridges, apartments, and late-night streets to keep the books moving between ordinary teen life and something more feral. Chloe is always half in one world and half in another. She might be worrying about her mother or a crush one minute, then leaping across a roof or running from an enemy the next. That push and pull gives the trilogy its pace.

By The Stolen and The Chosen, the story is less about discovering powers and more about what Chloe is supposed to do with them. She keeps getting told she matters, maybe too much. Rival factions, old grudges, and questions of loyalty press in from every side, and the danger spreads to the people around her. Chloe's strength as a protagonist is that she does not begin as a chosen-one type who wants destiny. She resists it, jokes about it, and gets angry at it.

That makes the tension work. These books have action, romance, and supernatural lore, but they also stay close to the awkwardness of being a teenager who wants a normal life and cannot have one. If you like city-set paranormal series with fast chapters, emotional stakes, and a heroine who has to grow into a role she never asked for, this trilogy is easy to race through. It was later adapted for television, but the books have their own snap and mood.
