Series background & context
Magic Marked is the first Night Realm season and the beginning of Chandelle LaVaun and Megan Montero’s shared universe outside the Coven. It centers on Ellie Sutton, a seventeen‑year‑old who thinks her biggest problems are mean girls, exams and missing the express subway in New York.
That illusion shatters when she crosses paths with Stellan Wentworth, a mage from another realm who insists she has powers of her own. One impossible rescue later, Ellie is dragged through a portal and dropped into the Night Realm, a layered multiverse where numbered realms, angelic guardians and vicious mages all fight over the same crumbling magic.
In Midnight Mage, Marvel Mage and Master Mage, Ellie is given almost no time to adjust. The world she lands in is beautiful and terrifying, full of glittering courts, deadly tournaments and enemies who are centuries older than she is. Her choices are stark: master her magic overnight or watch entire realms collapse.
The series mixes the feel of a superhero origin story with romantic urban fantasy. Ellie is sarcastic, stubborn and much braver than she believes, while Stellan is the kind of reluctantly protective hero who looks like he stepped off a movie poster. Their chemistry builds alongside the plot, turning training sessions, late‑night research and world‑hopping missions into slow‑burn tension.
Magic Marked also does a lot of heavy lifting for the wider Night Realm project. It introduces Megelle Island, the mages’ home bases and the politics that later explode in the fae‑focused Court Marked season and the holiday‑themed Christmas and Halloween Marked novellas. You do not have to read The Coven first to follow this series, but long‑time fans will spot nods to the other world.
If you like portal fantasy with a modern voice, sprawling multi‑realm stakes and a central couple you can root for from page one, Magic Marked is the Night Realm arc to start with.
