The main run begins with The Mysterious Benedict Society, continues through The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey and The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Prisoner's Dilemma, and returns later with The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Riddle of Ages, when the characters are older. The Extraordinary Education of Nicholas Benedict looks back at Mr. Benedict's childhood, and the puzzle book is a companion for readers who want more riddles than plot. The books were later adapted for television.

What makes the series last is its balance. It respects young readers, gives them real stakes, and still leaves room for humor, warmth, and the pleasure of watching a group of very different children become a family of their own.
