Monster Whisperer

by LG Estrella

2019

Patrick Richards finally lands his dream job studying real monsters like dragons and basilisks. The catch is that his work now doubles as a dangerous reality show, and one careless decision could mean spectacular footage, ruined careers, and a very final kind of on screen death.

Series background & context

The Monster Whisperer series treats classic fantasy beasts as if they were wildlife that can be catalogued, filmed, and turned into entertainment. It is set in a modern world where dragons, hydras, basilisks, and other lethal creatures are real enough that you can sell advertising around them.

Patrick Richards grew up obsessed with monsters. As an adult he has managed to turn that obsession into a job as a monster researcher, although the work is nothing like the glossy documentaries that first hooked him. Funding is scarce, most of the best experts are dead or retired, and even minor mistakes tend to end with someone being eaten.

When a powerful media company offers him a deal, it feels like a last chance. They will bankroll expeditions in exchange for a television series that gets viewers as close as possible to the world's most dangerous creatures. Patrick knows stunt driven shows are risky, but research grants are not falling from the sky and his subject matter is too important to abandon.

The stories follow Patrick and his small team from one shoot to the next. They track legendary dragons, negotiate access to habitats that governments would prefer to keep off limits, and argue with producers who care more about dramatic footage than about safety protocols. Each encounter forces Patrick to balance two conflicting instincts. The scientist in him wants to observe and understand. The survivor in him wants everyone to get home in one piece.

Estrella mixes tense fieldwork with workplace comedy. There are crew members whose enthusiasm runs ahead of their judgement, local fixers with their own agendas, and camera operators who discover that tripods are poor protection against hydra venom. Along the way the books raise questions about conservation, exploitation, and what it means to "whisper" to creatures that could end you in a heartbeat.

Even though monsters provide the spectacle, the emotional core stays with Patrick and his colleagues. They argue, laugh, panic, and occasionally freeze when faced with something truly overwhelming. It is a series for readers who enjoy creature features but also want to think about the people who stand just off camera, making sure the shot happens at all.
