The Mersey Queen

by Katie Flynn

2026

Just after the First World War, Nell Tanner rejoices at her father’s return, only to find post‑war Britain harsher than she hoped. When best friend Alfie is posted away and charming Thomas Evans enters her life with secrets of his own, Nell must decide whom to trust—and what kind of future she dares claim on the banks of the Mersey.

Series background & context

The Mersey Queen is the planned opening volume of a new trilogy that moves Katie Flynn’s storytelling into the years just after the First World War. Where many of her earlier books focus on the build‑up to or height of war, this series looks at what happens when the guns fall silent but the struggle to live well is far from over.

Nell Tanner is at the centre of The Mersey Queen. She has grown up during the war and is overjoyed when her father finally comes home. Like many families, the Tanners imagine that peace will usher in comfort and opportunity. Instead they find a Britain facing unemployment, shortages and emotional scars that don’t show on parade.

Nell leans on her childhood friendship with Alfie, a boy who understands both her dreams and her stubborn streak. Their bond gradually deepens into something more, but just as she begins to see him in a new light, Alfie is posted miles away. Realising too late how much she cares for him, Nell is left behind in a grey, struggling Liverpool to piece together a life of her own.

Enter Thomas Evans, a handsome newcomer whose attentions are both flattering and comforting. Thomas seems to offer everything Alfie’s absence has taken away: companionship, a touch of glamour and the promise of escape from post‑war drudgery. Yet Thomas is not as straightforward as he appears. He carries secrets that, once uncovered, force Nell to question his motives and her own judgement.

The book explores familiar Katie Flynn territory—tight‑knit streets, docks, factories and the constant balancing act between duty and desire—but against a slightly different backdrop. Men are returning from the front changed by what they have seen; women who stepped into new roles during the war are reluctant to give up their independence. Nell must navigate neighbours’ expectations, family loyalties and her own ambitions while deciding which man, if either, fits into the future she wants.

As the trilogy unfolds in later volumes, readers can expect to see Nell grow from a hopeful girl into a woman who understands the costs of love and compromise, all while Liverpool itself shifts from the immediate aftermath of war towards a new decade. The Mersey Queen sets that story in motion and offers a starting point for readers who like their historical sagas filled with emotion, moral dilemmas and a vivid sense of place.
