The series grows as it goes. City of Thirst sends Marrill back into the Stream when magical flooding threatens her world, and it builds toward the secrets of Monerva and its wish machine. Shadows of the Lost Sun brings Fin's missing mother and a dangerous wish orb to the front. Iron Tide Rising closes things out by forcing old enemies into uneasy alliances as the fate of the Stream itself comes under threat.

Underneath the pace, these books are really about memory, belonging, and the people you choose to travel with. Fin's forgettable magic and Marrill's outsider perspective give the series a nice push and pull. He worries about being lost. She worries about finding her way back. Together they make the story warmer than the pirate chaos alone would suggest.

These are quest stories for readers who like portals, floating rules, jokes mixed with danger, and friendships tested by huge magical stakes.
