Ms. Frizzle's class expects an ordinary visit to the waterworks, but their bus takes them into a cloud. Shrinking to raindrop size, the children follow water through rivers and treatment facilities while learning how their town's supply works.

When most students neglect their rock-collecting homework, Ms. Frizzle arranges a field trip beneath Earth's surface. The class investigates rocks and layers of the planet on a journey through the crust and toward its core.

A trip to a museum becomes an exploration of Arnold's body when the bus shrinks and is swallowed. Ms. Frizzle's class follows the route of food and examines organs involved in digestion, circulation, and other bodily functions.

A closed planetarium fails to stop Ms. Frizzle's lesson about space. Transforming the bus into a spacecraft, she takes her class beyond Earth's atmosphere to examine the Moon and other places within the solar system.

Ms. Frizzle turns the bus into a time machine for a journey into prehistory. Her class visits different periods of the Mesozoic Era, observing dinosaurs and exploring the changing environments in which these ancient animals lived.

Ms. Frizzle drives her class into the sea, taking a concerned lifeguard along for the ride. Their underwater expedition explores coral reefs, hot-water vents, and the plants and animals that inhabit the ocean's varied environments.

Ms. Frizzle teaches weather by taking her class through clouds and directly into powerful storms. Their firsthand encounter with a hurricane and tornado becomes more urgent when Arnold goes missing during the turbulent journey.

The bus becomes a hive, giving Ms. Frizzle's students a bee's view of colony life. They investigate the roles of workers, drones, and queens, along with food gathering, honey production, comb building, and care for young bees.

An electrical blackout prompts Ms. Frizzle to investigate electricity with her class. Their trip through a power plant, wires, and household devices explains how current is generated, distributed, and used to produce light, heat, and movement.

Ms. Frizzle's class investigates perception on a trip through sensory organs, including an eye, an ear, a tongue, and a dog's nose. Their observations introduce the ways humans and other animals gather information about their surroundings.

With science fair projects urgently needed, Ms. Frizzle takes her students on a tour through scientific history. Encounters with figures such as Galileo, Newton, and Einstein show how observation, experiments, and persistence lead to discoveries.

Ms. Frizzle takes her class to the Arctic and other regions to investigate a warming planet. The journey explains climate change and its effects while introducing choices that can help children understand and respond to the problem.

Arnold's questions about his family tree send Ms. Frizzle's class billions of years into the past. Their journey follows life from early cells through changing animal forms, primates, and humans, introducing evolution across an immense timescale.
