The Living Books in Order

The The Living series is Matt de la Peña in thriller mode. At the center is Shy, a working-class teen who takes a summer job on a luxury cruise ship hoping to help his mother and sister with bills. What starts as a practical plan turns into a survival story almost immediately, and the series never really lets him catch his breath after that.

In The Living, a massive earthquake hits California while Shy is at sea, and the disaster does not stay neatly in the background. The ship goes down, supplies vanish, panic spreads, and the Pacific becomes a brutal place to stay alive. Shy is not just fighting the elements. He is also forced to read the people around him fast, including passengers whose money and status stop meaning much once everything falls apart.

Then the story gets even stranger.

This series mixes natural disaster, survival adventure, and conspiracy thriller. As Shy pieces together what happened, he learns that the chaos around him may connect to something planned, hidden, and deadly. Addie, the daughter of a powerful man, and Carmen, a coworker from the ship, both matter to the story, but the real engine is Shy's growing sense that he cannot just escape. He has to understand what is going on, and he has to decide what kind of person he will be when fear is pushing everyone toward selfish choices.

The Hunted picks up with Shy still on the move and still in danger. By that point, he knows enough to make him valuable to the wrong people. The setting shifts back toward California, but home is no safe landing. The coast is damaged, the social order is fraying, and every step forward can turn into a trap. The second book keeps the pressure high and turns the aftermath of the first novel into a chase.

These are not cozy adventures.

What gives the books weight is the way de la Peña keeps class and power in the frame. Shy is surrounded by wealth from the opening pages, first as a worker serving rich vacationers, later as someone trying to survive the wreckage they leave behind. The action moves fast, but the series never forgets who gets protected first, who gets overlooked, and what it means for a teenager to carry responsibility before he is ready.

If you want page-turning YA with storms, shipwrecks, desperate choices, and a hero who has to grow up fast, this series fits. Expect danger, momentum, and a lot of physical tension, but also a coming-of-age thread about conscience, family, and how hard it can be to do the right thing when the whole world feels tilted.
