The Lesbiana's Guide to Catholic School Books in Order

The Lesbiana's Guide to Catholic School books are a connected young adult duology about the Flores siblings, Yamilet and Cesar. Both stories unfold in the same Arizona Catholic-school world, but each book gives a different sibling the chance to tell their side of the story. Start with The Lesbiana's Guide to Catholic School, then move to The Golden Boy's Guide to Bipolar.

The first book belongs to Yamilet, known as Yami. She transfers to a mostly white Catholic high school hoping for a clean slate after a painful rejection at her old school. Yami wants to keep her sexuality private, make her mother proud, and protect her younger brother from more trouble. Then she meets Bo, the school's openly queer girl, whose confidence both attracts and unsettles her. Their connection makes it harder for Yami to keep treating honesty as something too risky to try.

Yami's problem is not simply whether she will get the girl.

Her story is also about family responsibility, religious pressure, cultural identity, and the exhaustion of trying to manage everybody else's expectations. The book has plenty of humor and romantic sparks, but it does not pretend that coming out is easy or safe for every teen. The Golden Boy's Guide to Bipolar shifts the focus to Cesar, Yami's older brother. Cesar has come out to people close to him and wants to repair his relationship with his ex-boyfriend, Jamal. He is also navigating a new bipolar diagnosis, medication, therapy, and thoughts that keep telling him he does not deserve love or help. When his mental health worsens, the polished image he has built as a gifted, funny, dependable student starts to crack.

Together, the books look at two siblings who love each other but carry different burdens. Catholic school matters because it is both a daily setting and a source of rules, shame, friendship, conflict, and belonging. The tone moves between witty teen observations, tender romance, family drama, and serious conversations about mental health. Read in order, the second book has more weight because it builds on relationships and changes introduced in Yami's story.

These are character-led books about young people learning that support can be messy, honesty can be scary, and neither one has to face everything alone.
