Lawfully Courted

by Laura Beers

2019

Marianne Notley runs to Lord Harington after an attack exposes her father's secret life. Edwin is one of the Crown's best spies, but protecting Marianne while hunting traitors proves far more personal than he expected.

Series background & context

The Lawkeepers is a law-and-order romance setup, and Laura Beers' contribution fits neatly inside the sort of story she does well. Instead of centering a drawing-room courtship, the focus shifts to danger, investigation, and the uneasy closeness that comes from one person needing protection and the other being the one most able to give it.

In Beers' case, that means espionage is never far away. Lawfully Courted brings in a heroine who has already been taught to defend herself, a father with secrets, an unexpected attack, and a hero who works for the Crown. That is classic Beers material. The external threat is real, the emotional reserve is real, and the romance grows because both characters are forced into trust before either is comfortable with it.

It is a compact setup, but a strong one.

Series like this tend to appeal to readers who want a little more action in their romance and do not mind if the couple spends part of the story on the move, piecing together clues, dodging enemies, or sorting out which allies are actually safe. The lawkeeping element adds urgency. These are not just people meeting at assemblies and trading glances. Someone usually has a job to do, and that job has consequences.

At the same time, Laura Beers rarely lets the suspense swallow the heart of the story. Even in a shorter format, she is interested in how capable women and guarded men misread each other, then slowly learn not to. So if you pick up The Lawkeepers for her entry, expect a Regency-flavored blend of mystery, pursuit, and romance, with enough danger to keep things moving and enough tenderness to make the ending feel earned.
