A Star Called Henry

by Roddy Doyle

1999

Henry Smart grows up in the Dublin slums of the early twentieth century, dodging hunger and the police before joining the Easter Rising and the guerrilla war that follows. His journey blends street survival, political idealism and an uneasy love of violence.

Series background & context

The Last Roundup trilogy follows Henry Smart, a boy born in the Dublin slums at the start of the twentieth century, whose life brushes up against many of the big events in Irish and American history. Told in his own blunt, fast-moving voice, the books feel like a tall tale that keeps turning back toward uncomfortable truths.

In A Star Called Henry, Henry survives a brutal childhood on the streets and is drawn into the Easter Rising and the guerrilla war that follows. He becomes a teenage fighter for the Irish Republican Army, famous for both his nerve and his talent for disappearing when things go wrong.

By Oh, Play That Thing, Henry has outlived his usefulness to his former comrades and flees to the United States. He hustles through Prohibition-era New York, then drifts to Chicago, where he ends up as bodyguard, fixer and sometime friend to a young Louis Armstrong, trying to stay one step ahead of the mob and the ghosts of Ireland.

In The Dead Republic, an older, battered Henry is coaxed back to Ireland when film director John Ford wants to turn his life into a big Hollywood story. As the project twists his memories into myth, Henry slips into quiet suburban life, only to find his legend revived again during the violence of the nineteen seventies.

Across the three novels Doyle plays with the gap between what really happened and the heroic stories people tell later. Street fights, marathon train rides and smoky jazz clubs sit alongside questions about nationalism, propaganda and who gets to own a rebel’s image.

Readers who enjoy character-driven history, a strong first-person voice and a mix of adventure and politics will find a lot to dig into here. Start with A Star Called Henry and read straight through in order, since Henry’s fortunes, lies and loyalties build from one book to the next.
