The Fallen Empires

by Jeff Wheeler

2027

Destroying the royals has triggered another war rather than ending the conflict. With rebellion and winter devastating the kingdom, a rising queen and her protector must confront the darkest magic in the second Last Harbinger novel.

Series background & context

Jeff Wheeler’s The Last Harbinger series brings a royal mission and a soldier’s duty into the troubled relationship between Muirwood and Kingfountain. It opens with The Last Harbinger, in which Princess Maia Fitzempress travels between worlds under the protection of Hastings Creigh. The journey takes place after a destructive war, when questions of succession and rising rebellion make a seemingly diplomatic assignment dangerous from the outset.

Hastings is an accomplished dragoon in Muirwood’s military, but his private habits offer little resemblance to an ideal royal guardian. Gambling, spending, and a disreputable manner complicate the picture of a man entrusted with a princess’s life. His appointment puts military skill beside political responsibility. He must protect someone whose importance extends far beyond the immediate hazards of travel, in a setting where threats to a person can also become threats to an entire realm.

Maia approaches the mission through her obligations to her people and to peace between the worlds. Her aunt rules in Kingfountain, where a curse and the illness of her royal cousins endanger the dynasty’s future. Restoring continuity to the royal line could help secure a kingdom already under pressure. Family connections therefore have public consequences: Maia’s relatives, her position, and her journey all belong to a larger struggle over who can keep a fractured political order together.

The royal visit carries the weight of a threatened succession.

The conflict reaches beyond courts and military service. Rebellion is growing in the aftermath of the imperial war, while magical beings have their own designs on the travelers. An ancient force threatens both worlds, placing Maia and Hastings between immediate political danger and a wider supernatural crisis. Their task is not confined to reaching a destination safely. The conditions awaiting them make protection, diplomacy, and survival parts of the same problem, with civil war an increasingly urgent possibility.

The Fallen Empires carries the sequence into a kingdom suffering from rebellion and winter, where a rising queen and her protector confront dark magic. Together, the books frame royal survival as only one part of preserving a realm: the destruction of a ruling family can provoke further conflict instead of settling what came before. The series combines a bodyguard-and-princess pairing with dynastic uncertainty, military tension, and connections between Wheeler’s fantasy worlds. Beginning with The Last Harbinger establishes the mission, the contrasting responsibilities of its two central figures, and the unstable peace that gives their journey its stakes.
