Series background & context

The Kiss Chronicles are Emily Kimelman's paranormal romance and urban fantasy books, published under the name Emily Reed. The series starts with Lost Secret, where Darling Price is trying to make sense of an unbearable loss. Her sister Megan, already seriously ill, disappears in the night. The police think Megan may have left by choice. Darling knows that explanation does not fit.

Darling is a musician living in Crescent City, a place with nightlife, music, and more hidden corners than she realizes. As she searches for Megan, her own body begins to change. Strange dreams, a dangerous hunger, and a growing sense that she has been lied to all point toward a world she never knew existed.

Nothing about her life is as ordinary as it seemed.

The series brings vampires, warlocks, the dead, magic, and long-buried family secrets into Darling's search for her sister. But the supernatural pieces are not just window dressing. They keep raising the personal stakes. Darling has to learn what she is, decide whom she can trust, and face the possibility that the people closest to her have kept vital truths from her.

Romance is part of the engine, too. Attraction can be intense, complicated, and risky, especially when desire and danger arrive together. The books lean into adult relationships and paranormal threats without losing sight of Darling's grief. Her investigation begins as a desperate attempt to bring Megan home, then expands into a struggle over identity, power, and control of her own future.

Crescent City matters because it gives the series its lively, shadowy urban-fantasy feel. Music and magic share the same streets. A familiar apartment, a late-night venue, or a quiet corner can quickly become a place where the rules change. The setting is full of people who may be ordinary, supernatural, or something harder to name.

Darling has a lot to learn, and very little time to learn it.

The three books, Lost Secret, Dark Secret, and Stolen Secret, work best in order. They form one connected story rather than three separate adventures. Readers should expect mystery, adult paranormal romance, danger, and a heroine whose search for one person opens the door to an entire hidden world.
