Series background & context
The Kings and Gods is Erin Trejo's dark romance series about a powerful society that treats intimate relationships as matters of rank and control. Its three books are The Oath, The Aftermath, and The Rise. Within this world, men hold the title of King and women can be selected as their Queens. Personal desire must contend with a system that expects important choices to be made for the people involved.
The Oath centers on Rylan and Tamsyn. He is a King, while she knows that her position as a Princess means she will eventually be assigned to someone. They want each other, but that does not guarantee they will be permitted to be together. The possibility that Tamsyn could be given to another man turns their attraction into a challenge to the structure governing their lives.
Rylan's devotion is tested by rules that offer him power while also restricting his choice. Tamsyn faces the corresponding problem from a different position: wanting a particular future does not mean she has the authority to claim it. Their romance therefore has a conflict beyond ordinary uncertainty about mutual feelings. The question is whether they can act on those feelings when doing so means resisting the path laid out for them.
Love is not considered a sufficient reason to choose.
The Aftermath shifts to Silas and Angel. Silas wants to secure Angel as his Queen, but pursuing that choice brings betrayals and long-kept secrets into view. He also works with his friends and members of the Gods to help vulnerable people in a world corrupted by greed. Those commitments place his personal attachment within a wider struggle over what people with power do with it, and whom that power actually serves.
The society provides the series' shared setting and continuing source of pressure. Its titles sound like promises of authority, yet they also define expectations that can deny people control over their own relationships. The romances make those abstract rules personal. A selected partner, a concealed truth, or a refusal to obey can change more than one couple's future, because the choices take place inside an organization invested in maintaining its arrangements.
Begin with The Oath, then continue to The Aftermath and The Rise. The first book introduces the relationship rules through Rylan and Tamsyn before the series expands its attention to other people and conflicts. Expect explicit dark romance, coercion, abuse, and threats surrounding the couples. This is a story world in which wanting to protect someone and challenging an unjust system can become inseparable, particularly when the system claims the right to decide whom that person must belong to.
