Series background & context
The Italian Cartel moves Shandi Boyes's romantic suspense into another crime-family world. The series begins with Dimitri and Roxanne, then spreads into related couples, family alliances, and crossovers with the Russian Mob Chronicles. If Nikolai is the Russian side of Boyes's underworld, this series is one of the main Italian doors.
The opening books, Dimitri, Roxanne, and Reign, follow Dimitri and Roxanne across a multi-book arc. Family comes first in this world, but family can also be the thing that traps you. Dimitri's loyalties, Roxanne's past, and the enemies circling them create the series' early tension.
Then the map gets bigger.
Mafia Ties is a key bridge book because it ties Dimitri and Roxanne's story to Nikolai's. After that, Maddox, Demi, and Ox shift the focus to Maddox and Demi, using family reputation, forbidden attraction, and cartel danger to push the romance forward. Later books such as Rocco, Clover, and Smith give supporting players their own romances and widen the view of the organization.
The series mixes mafia politics with very personal stakes. Characters are often trying to protect a lover, keep a family name intact, or escape the damage caused by earlier choices. Boyes also uses the series to show how criminal power looks different depending on who is holding it, a don, a hacker, a killer, a daughter, or someone dragged into the world by accident.
Readers should expect dark romance elements, violence around the edges, possessive heroes, and heroines who are not as breakable as the men first assume. It is best read in order, especially if you plan to include Mafia Ties, because the emotional payoff depends on knowing where the Russian and Italian storylines meet.
