Series background & context

TJ Klune's Cerulean Sea books follow a family forming around an island home for magical children. The first novel approaches that home through Linus Baker, a government caseworker who has made a life out of doing things properly. Sent to assess an unusual orphanage, he expects to apply the rules he knows. Instead, meeting the children and their caretaker challenges the assumptions behind his work and the quiet limits he has placed on his own life.

In The House in the Cerulean Sea, Linus works for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. His assignment takes him to Marsyas Island, where Arthur Parnassus cares for six children. Their abilities make officials anxious, and Linus has to decide whether the home is safe. The official question encourages him to think in terms of danger and classification, while daily life on the island gives him the chance to know the people those labels describe.

Arthur's commitment to the children is central to what Linus finds there. The home offers a place where unusual abilities do not have to erase a child's need for affection, patience and ordinary pleasures. As Linus becomes more involved, his relationship with Arthur develops alongside his attachment to the household. Professional distance grows harder to maintain when the people he is assessing begin to feel like people he could belong with. Secrets and outside expectations put that possibility under pressure.

The island is a refuge, but its family still has to answer to the world beyond it.

Somewhere Beyond the Sea shifts the focus toward Arthur and the life he is trying to protect. He hopes to adopt the children, with Linus beside him, but a demand that he speak publicly about his past threatens the stability they want. The arrival of another child adds to the responsibilities of the household. Arthur must consider not only how to offer safety within the home, but how to resist a system whose judgments can reach inside it. The sequel develops the first book's questions about care, belonging and institutional power.

The tone combines warm fantasy, humor, queer romance and found family with a serious concern about prejudice. Magical differences make the setting fantastical, while the desire to be loved without having to deny who you are keeps the story grounded in familiar feelings. Begin with The House in the Cerulean Sea, then continue with Somewhere Beyond the Sea. The order follows Linus's introduction to the island before moving more fully into Arthur's perspective and the family's continuing struggle to keep the home they have made together.
