The Last Thing I Remember

by Andrew Klavan

2009

Charlie West goes to bed thinking about karate class and a girl from school and wakes up tied to a chair in a windowless room while strangers discuss how to kill him. Escaping into the night, he discovers he is wanted for murder and terrorism, and has somehow lost an entire year of his life.

Series background & context

The Homelanders novels open with one of Klavan’s most gripping setups: a normal kid wakes up strapped to a chair in a torture chamber, with no idea how he got there. Charlie West remembers being a karate-practicing high-school student with a crush and plans for the Air Force. Now men with knives are arguing about how to kill him.

He escapes, only to discover that a full year of his life is missing. The police think he murdered his best friend. A homegrown terror group called the Homelanders seems convinced he is one of them. His face is on wanted posters, and even the adults he trusted are not sure what to believe.

From that moment on, Charlie is running for his life and trying to find out who he really is.

Across The Last Thing I Remember, The Long Way Home, The Truth of the Matter, and The Final Hour, Charlie moves from safe houses and abandoned buildings to secret camps, federal prisons, and back to his own hometown. Each book peels back another layer of the lost year, revealing the mission he was drawn into, the extremists he crossed, and the reasons he chose to act the way he did.

Klavan writes these like a teen version of a ticking-clock thriller: lots of close calls, undercover work, and narrow escapes, but anchored in Charlie’s stubborn sense of right and wrong. The series talks openly about faith, loyalty, and love of country without turning the hero into a plaster saint. He gets scared, makes bad calls, and keeps going anyway.

Because the books are short and packed with action, they work well for newer or reluctant readers. At the same time, the amnesia puzzle and the moral questions – what you would risk for the truth, and who you become under pressure – give older teens plenty to think about too.

Read in order for the full effect; each volume ends with another reveal that re-colors everything you thought you knew.
