This is still an Academy series, but it feels slightly darker and tighter than The Spoken Mage. Verene is not only learning magic. She is learning whether she belongs in a system built around the very thing she seems to lack. The politics are sharper, the family expectations heavier, and the danger often comes from inside the institutions that are supposed to protect her.
