The Last Slayer
by Nadia Lee
2011
Demon hunter Ashera del Cid becomes prey after killing a demigod’s pet dragon, and her only ally is Ramiel, a dangerous demon who knows more about her heritage than he admits, pulling her toward a destiny tied to the last slayer.
Series background & context
The Heartstone Trilogy steps away from boardrooms and penthouses into an urban fantasy world where demons, dragons and demigods exist just outside human sight. At the center is Ashera del Cid, a talented demon hunter who works for a firm that quietly handles supernatural problems the way other companies handle contracts and lawsuits.
In the opening book Ashera kills the pet dragon of a powerful demigod, thinking it is just another dangerous creature that needed to be put down. That one job turns her from hunter into prey. Suddenly she is marked, hunted and forced to question everything she thought she knew about the politics between magical factions.
Her only real ally is Ramiel, a beautiful, infuriating demon who keeps showing up exactly when she needs help. He offers protection and information, but he clearly has his own agenda. Ashera is drawn to him in ways that unsettle her, especially once she realizes he knows more about her true heritage than he lets on.
As the series unfolds, Ashera learns she is the daughter of the last slayer, part of a bloodline that terrifies the powers who currently run the world from the shadows. That legacy comes with abilities she never asked for and enemies who would rather see her erased than allow her to claim it.
Heartstone stories mix magic heavy action with romance and a strong sense of found family among monster hunters, mages and outcast demons. The tone is more fantastical and adventurous than Nadia Lee’s contemporary work, but the emotional through line is familiar. It is still about a guarded heroine learning to trust, a dangerous man trying to do the right thing, and two people facing down impossible odds together.
