Series background & context

The Heart of a Scandal grows directly out of The Heart of a Duke, and it feels like a close cousin to that series in the best way. The books share characters, family history, and even a prequel in In Need of a Knight, but this line narrows the focus to women carrying old wounds and men who are often just as damaged.

A pendant and a promise echo in the background, but the series is less about legend than about recovery.

In books like Schooling the Duke, A Lady's Guide to a Gentleman's Heart, A Matchmaker for a Marquess, His Duchess For A Day, and Five Days with a Duke, Caldwell leans into practical heroines, bruised aristocrats, and the sort of emotional stand-off she handles so well. A finishing school instructor, a lady trying to chart her own future, a reluctant matchmaker, or a woman making one desperate bargain, all fit naturally into this world.

The tone is romantic and connected, but there is often a layer of regret beneath it. These are people who feel they missed their chance, trusted the wrong person, or settled for less than they wanted. The series keeps asking whether that story can still change.

It can. Just not easily.

If you already like The Heart of a Duke, this is an easy next stop. If you are new to Caldwell and want something with that same emotional style but on a slightly smaller scale, it also works well as an entry point.
