The Haunted Heart Books in Order

The Haunted Heart is one of Josh Lanyon's moodier supernatural mysteries. The series opens with Flynn Ambrose, an antiques dealer still reeling from the death of his lover, moving into an old house on Pitch Pine Lane to sort through the strange inventory left by his late uncle's private museum. He is grieving, exhausted, and not exactly in the market for the unexplained.

Naturally, the unexplained shows up anyway.

The first book, Winter, leans hard into creaking floors, old mirrors, uneasy shadows, and that particular kind of silence a big house can make feel threatening. But the haunting is not just atmosphere. Flynn really is being drawn into something odd and possibly dangerous, and his nearest unwilling ally is Kirk Murdoch, the writer next door, who seems gruff, skeptical, and more useful than either of them expects.

What makes this series work is that the supernatural element and the emotional element are doing the same job. Flynn is haunted in more than one sense. Grief leaves him open, raw, and uncertain of his own judgment. That gives the eerie events extra force. Are these manifestations, warnings, tricks of a worn-out mind, or some combination of all three?

Lanyon keeps the tone intimate rather than epic. This is not a big fantasy world with rule books and magical systems. It is a spooky, melancholy mystery with old objects, private sorrow, and a growing connection between two people who would both prefer not to need anybody.

If you like your mysteries with antique mirrors, lonely houses, and just enough genuine strangeness to keep you off balance, The Haunted Heart is a very good fit.
