Six Haunted Hairdos

Seven Spiders Spinning
by Gregory Maguire

Series background & context
The Hamlet Chronicles unfold in the small town of Hamlet, Vermont, mostly inside one unforgettable fifth‑grade classroom. Miss Earth is the kind of teacher who believes in group projects, good stories and second chances. Her students, however, mostly believe in winning. The girls have banded together as the Tattletales, the boys as the Copycats, and every school day feels like a miniature cold war.
Across seven books, that simmering rivalry keeps colliding with something far stranger than spelling tests. Prehistoric Siberian snow spiders thaw out and go hunting for little girls they have imprinted on. The ghosts of mammoths go looking for their lost calf. A squad of spacefaring elves mistakes Santa for an evil overlord. Ancient cupids misfire their love arrows all over town. Genetically tinkered eggs hatch into creatures no one is quite prepared to parent. April Fools pranks spiral out of control, and a final Fourth of July brings the whole menagerie back for one last, breathless goodbye.
Underneath the slapstick and supernatural mayhem, the series is really about kids learning how to live together. The Tattletales and Copycats swagger and scheme, but they also have to sit in the same classroom, share the same sidewalks and answer to the same grown‑ups. Friendships cross club lines. New students arrive and do not fit neatly into either camp. Miss Earth, the long‑suffering mayor, a pushy television reporter and other townspeople give the children plenty of chances to see that adults are flawed too.
Each volume takes on a different shade of trouble: fear and courage in the face of giant spiders, questions about science and ethics when mutant eggs appear, the pressure to be cool when love magic starts flying around, the grief that comes with change when a beloved teacher goes missing. Maguire lets his jokes land, but he also lets consequences stick. A prank can hurt someone. A lie can protect or betray. A monster might be dangerous, or just misunderstood.
The tone stays light and fast, full of wordplay, running gags and holiday set pieces tied to Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, springtime and summer fireworks. Still, readers who move through the books in order will notice that the stakes slowly rise as the class inches toward middle school and Miss Earth faces changes of her own. By the time One Final Firecracker closes the series, the town feels like a real place you might drive through on a summer road trip.
If you like classroom comedies with a spooky or absurd twist, The Hamlet Chronicles offer a complete arc: start with the spiders, stay for the squabbling clubs and watch a bunch of very human kids grow up while the wildest things happen right over their heads.
