The Gifted Realm Books in Order

The Gifted Realm is where Jillian Neal first built her fictional world, and it is still the series that shows her biggest canvas. These books imagine a modern world where gifted people live alongside everyone else, hidden in plain sight, able to draw on and direct the energies of the earth and their own bodies. That concept gives the series its fantasy hook, but the books run just as heavily on family bonds, romance, politics, and the long fight against an organized criminal enemy.

At the center, at least at the start, are Rainer Lawson and Emily Haydenshire.

Within the Realm introduces Rainer as he comes of age after the murder of his parents and prepares to join the Elite Iodex, a law-enforcement force tasked with protecting the Gifted world. Emily, the love of his life, is part of the powerful Haydenshire family, and that family quickly becomes the emotional core of the series. They are loving, complicated, protective, and never far from the center of whatever is happening. That sense of a big, noisy, deeply connected household gives the series warmth even when the plot turns dark.

The first three books, Within the Realm, Lessons Learned, and Every Action, build out the main conflict with the Interfeci, the criminal organization trying to claw back power. The stakes widen from young love and personal loss to public danger, elections, betrayal, and questions about who should lead and who can be trusted. Neal also uses these books to show that romance and action are not separate tracks in this world. They keep colliding.

As the series goes on, it becomes more ensemble-driven. Rock Bottom and An Angel All His Own bring Dan Vindico and Fionna Styler much more clearly to the front. Dan, the fierce chief of Elite Iodex, carries a lot of anger and grief, and his arc gives the middle of the series a harder edge. The final books, All But Lost and The Quelling Tide, keep building on that, with the fight against the Interfeci growing more costly and more personal.

The tone is a blend of paranormal romance, family saga, and crime story. The powers matter, but the books are just as interested in emotional fallout, in who gets hurt by violence, by secrecy, and by loyalty pushed too far. That means the series can feel broader and more serialized than Neal's later contemporaries. Relationships carry forward. Threats evolve. Earlier events keep echoing.

Because of that, The Gifted Realm is best read in order. It is the place to start if you want the clearest look at Neal's early voice and at the themes she kept returning to later, protective love interests, close family units, villains who do real damage, and characters who have to earn peace the hard way. If you like romance with fantasy machinery under it and a continuing storyline above it, this is the series most likely to pull you in.
