Series background & context
The Gentlemen's Gamble is a multi-author Regency series linked by a single wager among friends. During their Grand Tour, seven young men believe they may not survive a storm at sea and make a bet: the last one to marry will pay the others.
It is a wonderfully tidy premise because it gives every book both a private romance and a shared social pressure. Each gentleman has his own story, but all of them are measuring themselves, at least a little, against the same old bargain.
Stockton's installment is A Foolish Proposal. Her couple, Tristan and Caroline, already have history, which means the fun begins before the romance fully does. A teasing remark helps derail Caroline's prospects, and soon both characters are trying to solve practical marriage problems without making the more dangerous emotional mistake of falling for each other.
That blend is really the series at its best. The wager adds humor and momentum, but the heart of the books is still the usual Regency trouble, pride, timing, money, affection, and people pretending they are thinking sensibly when they are very much not.
You can read these books on their own, but if you enjoy a connected friend group and a shared premise carrying from one romance to the next, the series is especially satisfying in order.
