Farmer's Holmes contribution is not content to stay politely in London. The Adventure of the Peerless Peer sends Holmes and Watson into wartime Africa and then has the nerve to place Tarzan in the same story.

That sounds like a joke, and part of it is. Farmer enjoys the absurdity of the meeting. But the book works because he also understands why both figures last. Holmes brings method, nerves, and dry intelligence. Tarzan brings direct action, physical command, and a totally different relation to the landscape.

The result is lighter on pure deduction than the canonical stories, and much heavier on travel, danger, and crossover play. Farmer even frames it in his favorite pseudo-editorial style, as though he is only presenting another forgotten Watson manuscript.

So if you are browsing this page, expect a Sherlock Holmes book that behaves more like an adventure yarn than a drawing-room mystery. That is the whole charm. Farmer does not protect the great detective from pulp energy. He throws him straight into it.
