Beneath a Shattered Sky

by LG Estrella

2015

On the broken world of Fracture, rifts spew monsters and only barrier magic keeps towns alive. Temple trained warrior Sophie is sent to find Matilda, a legendary barrier mage, and ends up on a sky ship crewed by misfits, fighting for fragile havens beneath a torn sky.

Series background & context

The Fracture Chronicles is set in a world that was literally broken by its ancestors. Long ago, a civilisation known only as the Ancients tried to win their wars by tearing holes between their world and many others. They tapped into alien energies and unleashed hordes of monsters. The plan backfired. The barriers between realities shattered, the skies split, and civilisation collapsed under a tide of everything that should have stayed outside.

Generations later, survivors have learned to live on a planet now called Fracture. Communities cling to islands of relative safety held together by barrier magic. These shimmering domes of power filter air and water, keep out most of the creatures that spill from the rifts, and sometimes even harvest a little of that stray energy for local mages. Beyond the barriers lie ash plains, warped forests, and cracks in the sky where otherworldly horrors still pour through.

Into this landscape steps Sophie, a graduate of Relic's Temple. She is a warrior trained to channel her innate magic through her body, capable of taking on monsters in hand to hand combat. Her legendary mother sends her out with a clear mission. Find Matilda, a former student who has become a myth in her own right, and learn from her.

Matilda is strong enough to shape barriers and clever enough to keep whole cities alive, but she is also a shameless flirt who drinks too much, gives cutting nicknames, and treats danger as an inconvenience. Sophie quickly finds herself pulled into Matilda's crew. Together they ride sky ships, drop into battles from the air, and tackle jobs that range from protecting outlying towns to confronting things no barrier should ever have to hold.

Beneath a Shattered Sky, the first book, balances vivid action with an undercurrent of comedy. Estrella uses the contrast between Sophie's earnest discipline and Matilda's chaotic brilliance to explore how legends are made, what they hide, and what it costs to live up to them. The series shares a love of monsters and large scale magic with Unconventional Heroes, but it stands alone. You can step into Fracture without having read any of Estrella's other work and still get the full story of this broken world and the people trying to stitch pieces of it back together.
