Raised in a Russian orphanage and later on the streets, Nikolai built a found family out of boys no one else protected. This dark mafia opener lets that brutal past shape both the man he becomes and the love story that finds him.

Series background & context

The Forgotten Boys is one of Serena Akeroyd's darkest connected series. It focuses on boys and men who were failed early, by institutions, by adults, by the systems that should have protected them, and who grew into something dangerous because forgetting them had consequences.

The first book, Silenced, points straight at that theme. The hero's past in a Russian orphanage and on the streets shapes everything that comes later, including the kind of family he tries to build for others like him.

That history matters as much as the romance.

This is not a series built on glamour. Even when it touches the same criminal worlds as her other books, it carries more grief and a heavier emotional weight. The love story has to move through that damage rather than around it.

If you want Serena Akeroyd at her bleakest and most hard-edged, with found family carrying almost as much importance as the romantic bond, The Forgotten Boys is a strong place to go next.
