Series background & context

The First Shift begins in grief. Maia Blake has lost the man she thought she would build her life with, and she is left trying to make sense of motherhood, loss, and a future that already feels unstable. Then her newborn daughter shifts into a wolf, and Maia learns that her late fiancé, Ryan, kept an enormous secret from her.

That secret changes everything.

From there, the series becomes a shifter story built around a human woman who is thrown into a world she never asked to join. Maia is not only learning that werewolves are real, she is also suddenly dealing with four Alpha wolves who say she is their fated mate. At the same time, Ryan's family wants custody of her daughter, which means the emotional stakes and the practical stakes hit at once.

The family angle is what gives this series its own flavor. Yes, there is romance, pack tension, and supernatural danger, but the story keeps circling back to Maia and her child. Protecting Phoebe matters as much as understanding the mate bond. Maia is also carrying a hidden clairvoyant ability and visions of Ryan, which adds another layer of uncertainty and pressure.

So readers should expect an emotional shifter romance with a single-mother core. There is grief here, but also fierce protectiveness, family conflict, and a heroine who has to become braver than she ever planned. If you like supernatural romance that keeps one foot in domestic stakes, The First Shift offers that mix.
