Lincoln Vailes carries over, now back in Louisiana and trying to rebuild his life while caring about a father in decline. The threats are more local, but they still come with real force. This book feels more personal, more bruised, and more interested in how past wounds keep shaping present choices.

By the time you get to In the Shadow of Evil, the series broadens again. The focus moves to fraud, murder, and rebuilding scams in a world shaped by hurricanes and economic strain. That gives the book a timely, grounded kind of menace. No monsters, no overblown villains, just people willing to profit from chaos and hurt anyone in the way.

So this is a good series if you want Robin Caroll's suspense side with a little more bite. The books are tied by tone and theme more than by a single hero and heroine. They ask how decent people respond when the bad thing in front of them is not abstract at all. It is organized, profitable, and frighteningly human. Read them in order if you can, especially because Lincoln's thread lands better that way.
