Instead, it is her contribution to a larger world created across multiple books, which means the appeal is a little different. You come for one fast, dangerous romance inside a city already humming with criminal power.

Her entry, Love for the Reaper, follows Devlin Espinosa, a Ferryman who transports the dead, or people meant to disappear, through the underworld without asking questions. That job tells you almost everything about the mood. Old Defiance is a city where crime has layers, status matters, and survival often depends on knowing when not to look too closely. Dev fits that world because he has built his life around distance and professionalism.

Then Remy lands in his car, and the distance stops working.

Remy is not a hardened criminal player. He is a regular man who witnesses the wrong thing and suddenly has killers after him. That mismatch is the engine of the novella. One hero belongs to the shadows. The other stumbles into them with no idea how deep they go. The romance grows from protection, proximity, and the discovery that Dev is far less detached than he would prefer.

Because this is a shorter shared-world story, the pacing is quick. Cochet does not waste time explaining every corner of the city. She trusts the atmosphere to do a lot of the work: the noir feel, the exclusive club, the sense that powerful people are always one floor below or one bad decision away. What matters most is the pairing and the immediate threat pressing on them.

The tone is darker than some of her cozier series, but not grim for the sake of it.

You still get her usual strengths, action, chemistry, banter, and emotional sincerity. The difference is that the backdrop is more dangerous and morally blurred. Dev is not a public hero. He is a man who has found a place in a crooked world and now has to decide what, and who, he is willing to risk that place for.

If you want to see how Cochet handles a criminal underworld setting without losing her sense of heart, this is a good one to try. It is brief, moody, and built around the tension between tenderness and danger.
