The East End Girls

by Jean Fullerton

2025

In 1942 Corporal Effie Weston joins the Women's Auxiliary Air Force to defend the East End, forming fierce friendships with fellow recruits Alice, Nell and George. A chance meeting with pilot Nathan Fitzgerald brings love and conflict, especially when he is reported missing in action.

Series background & context

The East End Girls series moves Jean Fullerton's trademark East London setting into the world of the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. Beginning in 1942, it follows a close knit group of young women who join up to help defend their city from the sky.

In The East End Girls, practical Corporal Effie Weston signs on with RAF Balloon Command and finds herself working alongside three very different recruits, warm hearted Alice Starling, down to earth Nell Reilly and well bred Georgina George St John Smythe. Together they haul barrage balloons into place, endure long night shifts and learn to trust one another as air raid sirens wail over the Thames.

Effie has no intention of letting romance distract her, until a chance encounter on a railway platform throws her into the path of Flight Officer Nathan Fitzgerald. Their growing relationship, and Effie's parents' reaction to it, plays out against dangerous call outs and the constant fear that any day might be Nathan's last.

The second book, Winter Wishes for the East End Girls, brings Alice centre stage. Two years after losing her husband at Dunkirk, she is still pouring her energy into WAAF duties when she bumps into American lieutenant Brogan Rafferty. As they help organise a Christmas party for local families who have lost almost everything, their sparring begins to soften into something more serious, only for another heavy raid to put their hopes at risk.

A third novel, A Wartime Promise for the East End Girls, continues the saga as the war deepens and fresh orders and family pressures test the promises the friends make to one another and to the people they love.

Across the series, camaraderie and humour sit alongside grief, rationing and the practical business of keeping enemy bombers at bay.

These books are ideal if you enjoy wartime stories focused on female friendship as much as romance. Each novel can be read on its own, but following Effie, Alice, Nell and George in order lets you see how their loyalties and lives are reshaped by each twist of the war.
