Trophy Wife

by Alessandra Torre

2017

A broke stripper takes a stranger's offer of marriage and a mansion, trading her cramped life for Nashville wealth and social status. As she settles into the role of perfect wife, she realizes her new husband is hiding dark secrets, including what really happened to the fiancée who vanished before her.

Series background & context

The Dumont Diaries began as a four part serial and later grew into the full length novel Trophy Wife. At its heart is a modern Cinderella story flipped on its head, where the fairy tale rescue comes with contracts, secrets, and a missing woman who haunts every page.

The heroine is a young woman who dances at a strip club to keep herself and her father afloat. Her world is small, full of late nights, regulars, and mounting bills. One evening a wealthy stranger named Nathan Dumont walks in, watches her with unsettling focus, and returns again and again. When he eventually offers her a way out, it is not a date but a deal: marry him and step into his world of mansions, private jets, and old Nashville money.

On paper, the arrangement is simple. He needs a wife for reasons he keeps vague, and she needs financial security. She trades a seedy apartment and overdue notices for country clubs, designer wardrobes, and staff who anticipate her every need. The sex is intense, the attraction undeniable, and for a while it is easy to forget that their marriage started as a transaction.

Under the polished surface, however, something sharp keeps catching. Everyone in town knows Nathan's name, and everyone remembers the fiancée who vanished years ago without explanation. Closed doors, hushed conversations, and odd rules in the house make it clear that not all of his past is buried. The heroine finds herself pulled between gratitude and suspicion as clues about what happened to the other woman begin to surface.

The Dumont Diaries plays with themes of power, consent, and the price of comfort. It is an erotic story, with plenty of steam, that also functions as a slow burn mystery about who Nathan really is and what kind of danger his new wife has stepped into. Readers who enjoy Trophy Wife will recognize many scenes and beats, since that later novel is an expanded and refined version of this same tale.

For the smoothest experience, it is easiest to think of The Dumont Diaries as the origin point for Trophy Wife. You can read either version on its own, but following the serial and then the novel lets you see how Alessandra Torre deepened the characters and raised the suspense with each pass.
