Series background & context
The Duke Hunt is a Regency quartet with a strong country house backbone and a lot of trouble around inheritance, status, and marriage. The series begins when the Penning dukedom is thrown into chaos, and that shake up sends several characters scrambling for money, respectability, and control of their futures.
The first book, The Duke Goes Down, introduces Peregrine Butler after his privileged life is upended by questions of legitimacy. From there the series moves through very different pairings while keeping the same mix of social pressure and strong attraction. The Rake Gets Ravished centers on Mercy Kittinger and the wealthy owner of London's most notorious gaming hell. The Scoundrel Falls Hard gives us a marriage of convenience involving a fierce village blacksmith. The Duke Starts a Scandal returns to the Penning line with Lucian, the new duke, and Susanna, his housekeeper.
What makes the series satisfying is how flexible the setting feels. Jordan can move from local heiresses and village gossip to gaming hells, blacksmith shops, and ducal estates without losing the thread. The hunt in the title is partly about dukes, of course, but also about security, legitimacy, and the kind of match that can repair a damaged future.
The heroines are especially strong here. Imogen, Mercy, Gwen, and Susanna all know how to hold their ground, and the series gets a lot of energy from men who are not prepared for that. Jordan keeps the books steamy and funny, but she also lets money and class do real narrative work.
If you like historical romances where titles matter but personality matters more, and where country life can be just as combustible as London society, The Duke Hunt is an easy series to keep reading.
