Deathly

by Brynne Asher

2021

Psychologist Aria Dillon spends her days helping people make better choices, then throws caution aside for brooding firefighter Brand Vitale at a charity auction. Their chemistry drags her into a world of secrets, obsession, and mafia grudges where loving him might be the most reckless decision of her life.

Series background & context

The Dillon Sisters duet takes Brynne Asher into a darker, moodier corner of her universe. Written in tandem with another author, the duet follows two sisters whose lives have been warped by trauma, secrets, and the dangerous men they cannot stay away from. Asher's contribution, Deathly, tells the first sister's story.

Dr Aria Dillon is a therapist who spends her days guiding patients toward healthier choices and better boundaries, yet her own life is quietly unraveling. On a dare to get out of her comfort zone she attends a charity event, fully intending to avoid both the auctioned puppies and the dates with uniformed first responders. Instead, she shocks herself by bidding on a glowering firefighter with a fluffy dog and a chip on his shoulder.

Brand Vitale looks like a hero to the rest of the world, but Aria quickly learns his world is far more violent and complicated than a calendar photo. Their attraction spirals into an obsession that pulls her out of the safe routines she has built and drops her into the orbit of mafia families, police investigations, and choices that do not line up with the advice she gives her clients.

While Deathly stands alone, it also sets up her sister's story in the companion novel, giving readers a sense of two women shaped by the same past but responding in very different ways. The tone is intense and twisty, with heavier psychological elements and blurred moral lines, yet the ending still delivers the kind of hard earned happily ever after Asher is known for.

Readers who like their romance a little darker, with obsession, morally gray decisions, and a heroine fighting both her heart and her training, will find The Dillon Sisters a compelling detour from the lighter banter of the Carpinos or even the Killers.
