Series background & context
The Devil Wears Black brings together L.J. Shen's romances about people who try to keep complicated feelings inside manageable arrangements. The title novel follows Maddie Goldbloom and her ex, Chase Black, while the companion novella Petty in Pink turns to Layla Schmidt and Grant Gerwig. These are separate couples in a shared world, with each story asking what happens when an agreement that seems temporary or casual begins to matter far more than expected.
Maddie has worked out what she wants her life to look like. She has a fashion career, a New York apartment and a boyfriend who is a pediatrician. Chase's return upsets that carefully arranged future. He broke her heart, so agreeing to help him is hardly an obvious choice. But he wants to fulfill his father's last wish, and doing so requires Maddie to pretend to be his fiancée. The request places an old relationship inside a new performance neither can keep entirely free of emotion.
Acting engaged means being close to someone Maddie has reasons to distrust.
The arrangement gives her an opportunity to see Chase uncomfortable, but it also makes it harder to keep their past safely behind them. As his defenses begin to fall, both have to consider what their connection means in the present. New York and Maddie's working life provide the contemporary setting, while the family request gives them a reason to spend time together that neither has to admit is romantic. The tension comes from knowing that pretending and feeling may not remain separate for long.
Petty in Pink takes a different route into the same problem. Layla, a teacher with a painful romantic history, has spent six years keeping her relationship with oncologist Grant casual. She believes the arrangement suits them both. Grant would like more, but knows that pressing her toward commitment could drive her away. A coworker's wedding brings someone from Layla's past back into view, and an impulsive night leads to an unexpected pregnancy. Plans that depended on avoiding serious conversations can no longer hold.
The tone is contemporary romance with humor, sexual content and an emphasis on emotional reluctance. Fake engagement and friends with benefits are different starting points, but both place the characters in situations where they must reconsider the boundaries they have set. Begin with The Devil Wears Black to meet Maddie and Chase, then read Petty in Pink for Layla and Grant's companion story. The shared thread is the difficulty of accepting affection when previous hurt or a carefully planned life has made avoiding it seem easier.
